Anger is a normal and even healthy emotion, but it is very necessary to control it in a positive way when you are provoked. If uncontrolled, it can take a toll on your mental wellbeing, violence against others and even self-harm. If you are struggling to keep cool and calm, here are some tips that will go a long way:
1. Count to ten slowly: When your temper flares, try counting one to ten slowly. It helps to control your temper and also puts your mind at rest. If at the end of the countdown you’re still upset, start counting again. This gives you time to cool down.
2. Practice relaxation skills: Take a deep breath and slowly repeat a calm word or phrase such as ‘’relax,’’ ‘’calm down,’’ ‘’take it easy’’ to yourself. Soothing classical music, or jazz/soul can do wonders as well.
3. Just sleep: This might be funny to some people but never underestimate the power of a good nap. Whenever you’re angry, just take a relaxing shower, and then go to bed. You will definitely feel better and be in a more relaxed mood to handle the tense situation.
4. Use imagery: Visualising a relaxing scene – at the beach or countryside maybe – and recollecting funny memories also help to cool your temper. These activities will help to put you together and relax your mind.
5. Exercise: When your temper flares, try going for a walk, running swimming, doing yoga or playing football. These exercises reduce stress and also relax your muscles. After the exercise, you’ll realise that you’re in a better mood to handle the situation.
6. Discuss it: Have a conversation with a friend or a family member. Discussing your feelings can actually help you get rid of the anger and also cool your temper. People see things differently and you never know who has the solution to your problem. A simple conversation can go a long way in helping you. Try it!!
7. No grudges: We have to accept that people are different and we cannot control the emotions of other people. You have to accept that people are just the way they are and not the way you actually prefer them to be.
